Firstly, it is important to know is that in Docfield, every document is directly linked to a template by default. This means that when you change a template, every document that comes from that template is changed, too.
That means that when you update a block in a Template, all Documents from that Template will be updated as well. Similarly, if you create or remove a block in the Template, all related Documents are updated too.
There are a few exceptions, when changes you make to a block in a Template are not updated in Documents:
- The block is an editable block, and in the Document the content of the block has already been changed.
- The block is a regular block, and the content has been overridden in the Document.
Disconnecting Documents
In some instances, it is desirable that a Document is no longer updated if the Template changes. For instance, when the Document is being signed, being reviewed by another party, or when a Document is already published somewhere.
To allow for this, it is possible to disconnect a Document from it's Template when it reaches a certain step in the Workflow. When a Document is disconnected, any Template changes won't affect the Document.
To enable this, go to the Template > Workflow and edit the step where the Document should be disconnected and use the 'Disconnect from Template' option.
Important: Once a Document is disconnected from a Template, it can't be reconnected.
Any Contracts in the Signing or Signed step also won't get any Template updates.
