In Docfield, Templates can have fixed and editable blocks. When a Document is created, only editable blocks can be edited in the Document. In general, this is desired as it allows Template editors to prescribe which blocks should be fixed and which blocks should not be fixed, for instance to prevent legally required clauses in a Document from being edited.
When a fixed block in a document needs to be changed, first consider whether this is truly an exception. If it is not, you may instead want to change the template and add a choice list, conditional logic, or make the block editable.
If it is an exception, users with select permissions can override the content on a Document block by using the 'override' option shown in the image below.
To override a block, the user needs at least edit access on the template & at least edit access on the document. Once something is overwritten, any document writer can update and change the overwritten section. However, only users with edit access on the template can remove / reset the override.
It is important to know that once an override is made, this override will persist even when the document is copied, or imported into another document. This is also valid for copies and imports made by users that otherwise would not be allowed to override content.
