This guide explains how to add meta fields in your templates for more dynamic and data-rich documents.
Meta fields are just like regular smart fields, except they don’t have to be present in the document contents. This is useful when you want to use conditional logic based on some value “about” a document that doesn’t make sense in the text.
For example, you might define the contract version as an option list meta field. Then, you can choose each contract's version without being forced to include an awkward 'This is version {{version}} of the contract' in the document's text.
An alternative example is to set the level of study as an option list meta field. This way, document writers can select either 'part-time' or 'full-time' for each document, instead of having to determine where to include this information in the contents of each document.
Other examples of meta fields include 'customer name', 'document type', or 'usage of specific clauses'.
Template / Adding a Meta Field
- Navigate to the Meta Fields Tab: In the smart field sidebar, click the “Meta Fields” tab. This is your dedicated space for creating and managing meta fields.
- Create a New Meta Field: Click the “Create Meta Field” button. Here, you can define the meta field’s name and properties.
- Configure a Meta field: these fields are configurable exactly the same way as normal smart fields.
Document / Meta Fields
- Filling in a meta field: You can add value to a meta field by directly going to the smart field sidebar or accessing it from the completion menu.
- Document completion: It is required that all meta fields are filled in before a document can be completed.
